‘Tell Me Lies’ Season 2 Ending Explained: Stephen Exposes Lucy and Evan’s Secret at Bree’s Wedding

The season 2 finale of Tell Me Lies ended with another cliffhanger that may affect the fate of Bree’s ( Catherine Missal ) friendship with Lucy ( Grace Van Patten ) and relationship with Evan ( Branden Cook ) forever. Plus, viewers finally found out what happened to Drew ( Benjamin Wadsworth ), while Lucy and Stephen’s ( Jackson White ) toxic relationship was front and center once again.

Marianne and Oliver’s ‘Open Marriage’ Secret

Back in the 2008 timeline, Bree confronted Oliver ( Tom Ellis ) – the older professor she was secretly dating – about his wife (and her teacher), Marianne ( Gabriella Pession ), wearing her earrings, which she purposely left in Oliver’s pants for Marianne to find. Bree admitted that she wanted Marianne to find the earrings so she could “make the decision” to end her marriage to Oliver and he wouldn’t have to. However, he told Bree that he wasn’t ever planning on leaving his wife and Bree admitted that she wasn’t OK with hiding away forever. Oliver ended the relationship with Bree.

Bree was distraught and met up with Oliver at his house the next day. After they slept together again, Marianne walked in on her in the bedroom while Oliver was showering. Rather than freaking out, though, Marianne calmly talked to her husband, who later explained to Bree that he and his wife had an “open marriage” and that Marianne knew about his relationship with Bree the entire time.

Bree was mortified that they had been keeping this a secret from her and talking about her for months. She stormed out on Oliver and then had one final confrontation with Marianne, who remained stoic and handed Bree back her earrings before she left the house.

Later on, Bree enlisted the help of Pippa ( Sonia Mena ) and Lucy to smash Oliver’s car with baseball bats.

Meanwhile, another scene revealed that Bree’s ex Evan was actually in one of Oliver’s classes the entire semester. However, he was still blissfully unaware that his own professor was the “older guy” that Bree had been hooking up with.

Diana Is a Master Manipulator Too

Diana ( Alicia Crowder ) was holding onto some secrets of her own. Following his hookup with Lucy at the end of the penultimate episode, Stephen ended things with Diana. Although she let him think she was angry and upset by the situation, it turned out that him breaking up with her was her plan all along.

Diana previously lied to Stephen and told him she bombed the LSAT. The finale revealed that she actually got an excellent score. She also purposely had her credit card deactivated so Stephen would think that her dad cut her off, which wasn’t the case. In fact, her dad picked her up from school and Diana informed him that things were over with Stephen. “You know how he is,” she added. “I had to make him think it was his idea.”

How Did Drew Die in the ‘Tell Me Lies’ Season 2 Finale?

After Wrigley’s ( Spencer House ) confession to Pippa that he was severely depressed, she enlisted the help of Diana to get Wrigley’s brother, Drew, to come for a visit. Drew had been ignoring Wrigley’s phone calls all semester but finally showed up.

The two made up and went out for a night of drinking, during which they took pills that Wrigley had been prescribed for his injured knee. The next morning, Wrigley woke up and found that his brother had died in his sleep.

Wrigley revealed that the painkillers he’d given Drew were time release pills, which can kill you if you cut them in half like Drew was doing.

Lucy and Stephen Can’t Let Each Other Go

Lucy spiraled after giving into Stephen and hooking up with him again. She immediately sought comfort in her ex Leo ( Thomas Doherty ) and promised him that she was over Stephen. Lucy told Leo she loved him and he said it back, but when they were in bed together, it was clear that her head was somewhere else.

Still, she continued to ignore Stephen’s calls and went to a holiday party with Leo. Stephen saw them there and approached them, but Lucy refused to speak to him. When he came across Leo alone, Stephen told him, “I f--ked her this morning.” After he provided evidence by describing Lucy’s underwear, Leo started beating the crap out of him, punching him in the face relentlessly.

Lucy tended to Stephen and when Leo was escorted out of the party, a small smirk was visible on Stephen’s bloody face, insinuating that he purposely didn’t fight back so Lucy would take his side.

After Drew’s death, Lucy had a breakdown and wanted to confess that she was the one who wrote the letter to the dean that revealed Drew’s involvement in the car accident that killed Macy Peterson the year before. Everyone else was under the impression that Pippa wrote the letter and before Drew and Wrigley made up, Drew blamed his older brother for the situation since Wrigley was the one who told Pippa what happened.

Lucy said she could no longer carry the guilt of being the person who actually made everything fall apart for Drew. Stephen urged her not to come clean, and when she went to confess anyway, he jumped in and took the heat. After a fake, over-the-top apology, Wrigley didn’t hesitate to forgive him, proving that Stephen’s manipulation tactics were as strong as ever.

He then went on to use his manipulation skills on Lucy, insisting that he only took the blame because he “loves” her.

Stephen Exposes Lucy and Evan’s Hookup to Bree

Stephen’s “confession” sparked something in Evan, who wanted to come clean about his own secret – that Lucy was the person he cheated on Bree with the previous year. He told Stephen the truth.

At first, Stephen left the room. While outside, he ran into Lucy’s former best friend from home, Lydia ( Natalee Linez ), who apologized for telling him off the last time they saw each other. Lydia made it clear that she was no longer cool with Lucy, who she claimed “hates all men” because she accused her brother, Chris ( Jacob Rodriguez ), of sexual assault. While Chris didn’t sexually assault Lucy, he did rape Pippa and another student Caitie, but Lydia refused to believe it. While we still don’t know how Stephen and Lydia actually got to the point of being engaged in the 2015 timeline, this opened the door for a relationship between them.

After cooling off – and devising a plan – Stephen went back to talk to Evan. He asked his best friend to clarify that Lucy was the one who he cheated on Bree with, but then he told Evan he forgave him. When Evan wanted assurance that Stephen wasn’t going to tell Bree or try to ruin his life, Stephen sneakily replied, “Not today.”

He made good on that promise by waiting for the perfect moment for revenge. On the morning of Bree and Evan’s wedding day in 2015, Stephen sent Bree audio of Evan’s confession, which he had recorded and held onto for seven years. She listened to it right before walking down the aisle, at which point the episode ended.
