In local district volleyball, the Groesbeck Lady Goats notched a straight set victory over the visiting Mexia Ladycats Tuesday night, 25-20, 25-15, 25-14.
Groesbeck was tied with Mexia early in the first set at 4-4. From there, the Lady Goats put together a 4-0 spurt and led for the remainder of the set. Towards the end of the opening set, Groesbeck opened up its biggest lead at 24-16 before a 4-0 rally from Mexia made the score competitive at 24-20. After a time out, a Mexia hitting error clinched the set for Groesbeck at 25-20.
"We were working as a team, being able to talk and asking for coach's help on what we need to improve and fix," Lady Goats junior outside hitter Kinsley Jackson said about the opening set. "We used our volleyball IQ to know where to place the ball."
The Lady Goats trailed 3-5 early in the second set. A big kill from Groesbeck sophomore Hannah Slater changed the momentum of the match and was the first of six straight points for the Lady Goats. Once Groesbeck took the lead, Mexia remained competitive and got to within two at 15-13. From there, a 10-2 run from the Lady Goats clinched the second set at 25-15 in favor of Groesbeck.
The Lady Goats notched the first two points of the final set, but briefly trailed at 3-5. A 7-1 rally by Groesbeck turned the tide and gave the Lady Goats a lead they would not relinquish. Two of Groesbeck's final four points were thanks to strong serves from Slater as the Lady Goats closed out the match 25-14.
Up next, Groesbeck plans to travel to Fairfield on Friday to take on the district front-runner Lady Eagles. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
"They are number one in the district, but that does not mean anything," Slater added. "We're going to come out to play, and we are going to show them who Groesbeck is."
