(7News) — A Prince George's County officer involved in a fatal shooting in early February just seconds after exiting his vehicle will not be facing charges, Maryland's Attorney General announced Tuesday.Violent video released in early 2024 showed Officer Braxton Shelton and other officers responding to a reported break-in at the Windham Creek Apartments on Suitland Road. Not long after, 31-year-old Melvin Jay was shot and pronounced dead.Police initially attributed some of the blame over the situation to the 911 caller, a person who knew Jay and lied to police about people breaking in. Officers found two people in the apartment at the time of the incident, who were related to one another.“The 911 caller also did not inform the 911 call taker that the two men he knew were in the apartment when he left approximately 25 minutes earlier,” Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz said in early March.Shelton did not announce himself to Jay, who appeared to ignore Shelton's command and reach into a sink; Maryland's attorney general said the officer heard a "metal on metal" sound as Jay reached into the sink.Authorities later discovered that Jay had a gun in his pocket and found another in the sink.</div></body>
