Mentors support first-generation and low-income students by helping them navigate important college deadlines and providing much-needed encouragement. The time commitment is small, with mentors dedicating about one hour per month.“tnAchieves mentoring offers the opportunity to make an impact that goes beyond an individual student,” said Tyler Ford, tnAchieves Vice President of External Partnerships. “Mentors play an important part in ensuring that first-generation, low-income students have the support necessary to begin their college careers. In doing so, mentors break down barriers for students and open doors to high-paying, in-demand careers.”Mentors are not required to have an extensive background in education; tnAchieves provides all necessary training and resources. Mentors typically work with 2-3 students, meeting them at their high schools in December, January, or February. Volunteers can choose which county and high school they would like to serve.Those interested in becoming a mentor can learn more and sign up by visiting tnAchieves.org/mentors.tnAchieves is a privately funded scholarship and mentoring program that aims to provide all Tennessee students with the opportunity to earn a post-secondary degree.
