The White House confirmed US President Joe Biden's visit to Berlin later this week in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement confirmed that Biden is due to travel to the German capital on Thursday, where he will meet with Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, among others.

Biden had originally planned to visit Berlin, followed by Angola, last week but had to cancel the trip due to Hurricane Milton in the US.

The White House's spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized the close cooperation between Biden and Scholz, particularly on support for Ukraine, in her statement.

She said the aim of the meeting was "to further strengthen the close bond the United States and Germany share as Allies and friends and coordinate on geopolitical priorities, including Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression and events in the Middle East."

The visit will be Biden's first bilateral visit to Germany during his term in office.

Originally, he had also planned to lead a Ukraine summit at the US airbase in Ramstein during his visit to Germany.

The White House has not yet announced whether the Ukraine summit will take place at a later date, but several meetings will take place in Berlin on Friday before Biden returns to the US.
