Stefanski Says Ownership Is Not Making Him Start Watson

How bad Deshaun Watson has been this year is news to no one. His struggles can be seen in the stats, as he ranks last in QBR among qualified quarterbacks. On top of that, the Browns have failed to convert on their last 26 third-down attempts. Having Deshaun on your team is a two-edged sword because of his awful play as of late and his expensive price tag. Oh, and all those sexual assault allegations, so really, it’s a three-edged sword.

Regarding Watson’s contract, it is massive. If the Browns wanted to cut their losses with Watson and get rid of him, it would cost them $72.9 Million in dead cap for the next two seasons. Currently, it is looking like the worst free-agent signing of all time.

Watson’s play has been so bad that Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski now has to give weekly status reports on Deshaun. For the last couple of weeks, he has double-downed on Watson continuing to be the team’s starter. However, now he is being asked if this decision is being mandated by Browns ownership.

Per ESPN’s Daniel Oyefus i, Stefanski responded with, “I don’t get caught up in narratives, but we have a good dialogue with myself, Andrew, ownership about all things that have to do with this team. They’ve been nothing but supportive, and any decision when it comes to football is my decision .”

If this is the case, then Stefanski should consider starting Jameis Winston , somebody they chose over the reigning comeback player of the year, Joe Flacco , who is now having success in Indianapolis.

The Browns can’t keep kicking the can down the road. Deshaun Watson is bad for their football team, so they can either continue to suck, or they can just take the cap hit that comes with cutting him. I know which I would choose.
