Interesting contract detail could hold Bears back from landing another impact player but he's not the only one worth pursuing

With the NFL trade deadline creeping up and the Chicago Bears currently on a bye week, the time is now for general manager Ryan Poles to make another deal.

Last year, Poles struck a deal with the Washington Commanders ahead of the trade deadline that sent eventual Pro Bowl defensive end Montez Sweat to the Bears .

After a 4-2 start to the season, the Bears could still be open to adding more high-end talent to the team and the most likely move would be to upgrade either front. However, one player might be off the board for the Bears based on an interesting contract detail that came out this week.

That player is pass rusher Haason Reddick, who is still involved in a puzzling circumstance with the New York Jets. The Jets traded for Reddick earlier in the offseason but the two-time Pro Bowler has yet to show up to the team facilities.

Reddick recently changed his agent, hiring Drew Rosenhaus, and soon after the Jets gave him permission to seek a trade to a new team. However, based on his original trade terms, if the Jets trade Reddick to an NFC team, New York would have to send Philadelphia a 2026 second-round pick, per Josina Anderson. A slight hiccup that could impact what team the Jets trade Reddick to.

Therefore, this small detail could hold the Bears back from landing Reddick before the deadline, if they were even interested. The hardest part about making a move for the veteran pass rusher is having to land a new contract after getting him in the building, which is something the Bears had to go through last season with Sweat.

Even if the Jets were willing to eat the pick to move Reddick to Chicago, who knows if Poles is willing to go through that process again. The Bears should let him be someone else's problem and pursue some of these other names instead.

The first name on the defensive front I'd inquire about would be Cincinnati Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson. Hendrickson is another player who would be looking for a new deal but has been ridiculously productive, racking up 58.0 sacks in the last five seasons combined.

As for going after someone on the offensive line, the Bears would have to break the norm to land someone worth trading for. Since the 2020 season, only four offensive linemen have been traded during the season. But don't rule anything out. The ideal target would be Cleveland Browns guard Wyatt Teller.

But, looking at the current roster, the Bears are likely to hold this time around at the deadline, unless someone wants to give up capital for running back Khalil Herbert . And it makes sense. The Bears are hoping to be at best a playoff team this year, where some of their glaring issues will really come to light to address before next season.
