‘The Voice’ Singer Takes Aim at “Uninspired” Coaching: “Felt More Like a Meet-And-Greet”

While countless singers hope to land a spot on the hit show The Voice, only a select few will make it to the blind auditions. And from there, even fewer make it onto a team helmed by one of the four coaches. From there, it is up to the contestants to showcase why they deserve a spot in the finale. Thankfully, the coaches are there to help the contestants navigate the competition and give them advice. But according to one former singer, the coaches seemed to be there more for the cameras than the contestants.

Appearing on The Voice Australia, the former contestant, who asked to keep their identity a secret, explained how the coaches rarely offered help. Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle, they said, “We really didn’t have any time to really connect with our coaches. They don’t seem to step outside of their characters. They are either told not to get too deep or promise too much because what you see is really uninspired.”

Looking at the lineup for The Voice Australia, the coaches consisted of Adam Lambert, Guy Sebastian, Kate Miller-Heidke, and LeAnn Rimes. While more than qualified to help the aspiring artists gain their footing on the show, the contestant recalled meeting their coach for the first time. “Our coach was really fun to meet and it was a pinch-me moment when they walked into the room but it felt more like a meet-and-greet than a coaching session. The focus on their hair and make-up was a priority and that disappointed us.”

Not The Same Experience For Every Contestant On ‘The Voice’

With the person suggesting the show brought in big names to get higher ratings, they insisted the production “sold this dream that you are getting quality coaching from these huge ‘artists’ but the interactions were quite contrived.”

While only discussing their time on The Voice Australia, former winner of The Voice, Asher HaVon, had nothing but praise for his coach Reba McEntire. Back when HaVon won, he credited Reba for creating a safe place. “Reba created such a safe place for me to come in and be my authentic self. It was so easy to let down walls that I had built over the years.” HaVon continued his praise of Reba, explaining, “It was just such a great time with her.”
