Yankees could bench rookie amid postseason struggles for Game 3 of ALCS

The New York Yankees have gotten off to a hot start to begin the American League Championship series, but rookie Austin Wells has struggled to find a groove.

After a fantastic rookie season taking over as the starting catcher for the Yankees, the left-handed slugger is hitting .083 with 10 strikeouts and just two hits in 26 plate appearances this postseason.

Doing so from the fourth spot in the batting order behind Aaron Judge, the Yankees reportedly are considering benching Wells for Jose Trevino in Game 3 of the ALCS against the Cleveland Guardians.

According to Michael Kay of YES Network , there's a "good chance" Giancarlo Stanton will hit fourth in the order while Trevino works as the battery mate for starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt.

It would be a peculiar move to have two righties hit back-to-back in the middle of the order considering how balanced Aaron Boone wants the lineup to be.

However, Wells can't continue hitting behind Judge with his struggles, and Stanton has been arguably the best postseason hitter on the Yankees roster.

Even with a 2-0 series lead, it's vital for the Yankees to leave Cleveland with at least one win so the fact that they're considering a lineup change is encouraging.

It will be interesting to see what the Yankees ultimately do with the lineup against Guardians left-handed starter Matthew Boyd.

But it seems they're leaning toward making a change for Thursday afternoon.
