City of Lexington conducting tree survey through Nov. 10

The City of Lexington is asking residents to share their thoughts about trees in a new survey, which is open through November 10. Angela Poe is a senior program manager with the Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works. She said the survey takes about 15 minutes.

“If we want to grow the urban canopy and want to continue to promote trees, we need to understand how people really feel about trees. Not everyone loves them. What are some of the concerns you have about putting them on your property?”

Two years ago, the urban county council set aside $1.5 million to support Lexington’s tree canopy. The Lex Grow Trees Committee was formed and is sponsoring the free survey, which Poe said was put on hold, thanks to Hurricane Helene.

“We actually delayed the survey by a week because I didn't want to put it out right after Helene, because I knew that would affect responses, and those are definitely legitimate responses. And certainly people, you know, a week is a week, but you can still see some of the evidence of the storm.”

Poe said she hopes for a conversation about how the city manages trees and help people manage their own trees. She said the survey, which is also available in Spanish and Swahili, will be followed by focus groups in areas with low tree canopies.
