Payne Aims to Maintain Knicks' Roster Spot

Playing in the NBA is a privilege, not a given right. Many talented players have worn the blue-and-orange jersey only to see their way out in short stints. Cameron Payne, a career journeyman who played with six teams in nine seasons, expressed desperation, which could be utilized as fuel for the remainder of the New York Knicks, regardless of their respective contracts.

After the Knicks' 111-105 win over the Charlotte Hornets, the veteran point guard revealed his dedication to playing for the Knicks and staying in the NBA.

"The biggest experience was me being waived and going overseas. I don't want to go back overseas," Payne said. "That's my identity. I'm going to play my heart out. I'm going to do whatever I gotta do to help the team win."

Aside from his four-season tenure with the Phoenix Suns, Payne hasn't played more than one consecutive season with a team. However, if he plays his cards right, he could remain in New York for at least a few seasons, given he keeps taking the veteran minimum.

Perhaps Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau could use Payne as a glowing example of what it takes to win and merely exist in the NBA as the league continues to obtain more talent and athletic abilities.

Although Payne's contract is guaranteed, New York's front office proved nothing is set in stone when it blew up the four-man "Villanova" Knicks before the city could celebrate the former college teammates together playing professional basketball.

Payne's desperation is a reminder that playing in the NBA is something many players are close to losing, regardless of pedigree or reputation.
