Mocha, a mare in her late 20s who had been in declining condition, was euthanized humanely Tuesday, according to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund’s Facebook page.

Contractors working on a house nearby reported they had seen Mocha down. After horse fund personnel determined she could not get back up, a vet was called and she was euthanized, the post said.

“She died peacefully and quietly, and was laid to rest in a safe, secluded spot in the place that had been her home for her entire life,” the post read. “This is what we hope for every wild horse in the herd.”

Mocha was “tough as nails” and blind in one eye, according to the fund. She spent a significant portion of her life in the marsh and wasn’t seen very often. The post said a rainbow appeared Wednesday morning over the spot of her death.

“We’d like to think it was a thank-you for respecting her wildness and letting her live and die with the dignity she deserved, and a reminder to stay hopeful for the future of this herd.”

In an earlier post, the fund reported it had been monitoring Flint, a stallion believed to be in his 30s. Though the horse is slowing and showing signs of the end of life, he is still behaving in a relatively normal fashion.
