One Direction singer Liam Payne dies in fall at 31

Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Singer Liam Payne died Wednesday in a fall from a CasaSur hotel third-floor balcony in Buenos Aires. He was 31.

Payne rose to fame as a member of the boy band One Direction, which also included Harry Styles , Zayn Malik , Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson .

According to Buenos Aires police, officers received a 911 call Wednesday afternoon about an unidentified "aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol."

By the time emergency services arrived, Payne was deceased. Circumstances leading up to the fall were not released, as police continue their investigation.

Videos, posted to social media earlier this month, show Payne attending former bandmate Horan's concert in Argentina on Oct. 2. He was also spotted traveling in Argentina with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.

Payne and One Direction debuted on The X Factor Season 7. Though they did not win, they released five albums before their hiatus in 2015.

The band was also featured in the Morgan Spurlock concert film One Direction: This Is Us . Payne released a solo album and was working on a second.

His last released single was "Teardrops" in March.

Tributes to Payne began pouring in shortly after news of the musician's death.

English broadcaster Piers Morgan wrote in a post on X, "Good grief ... what a shocking tragedy."

Music producer Zedd, who collaborated with Payne on "Get Low," called his death " absolutely heartbreaking ."

"So upsetting to hear the news of Liam Payne's passing. Sending love and condolences to his family and loved ones. RIP my friend," Paris Hilton wrote on X.

Singer-songwriter Charlie Puth wrote that he was in shock, adding "Liam was always so kind to me. He was one of the first major artists I got to work with. I cannot believe he is gone."

Singer Mabel also extended her condolences on Instagram.

"Liam and for so many years I always knew I could call you for support and big brotherly advice but now you're gone," she wrote. "My thoughts and prayers are with Liam's family and friends during this time you'll be so missed."
