He will be playing in his first game since Sept. 18 of last year when he suffered a left knee injury so serious it required two surgeries to repair and an untold number of rehab hours to get to where he is now.<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="500" data-dnt="true">Nick Chubb is back! He will be a boost to the team not just because of the way he runs the ball, but also because of the spirit he adds to the team.“Super, super nice,” Watson said. “To be able to have his presence, his energy, his work ethic, and just to have Chubb in the backfield. He definitely means a lot, not just for this offense, but for this community and this organization. So definitely that excitement and hopefully that spark that we need to take it to another level.”On the morning of Oct. 16, a story authored by Chubb, with the headline “Cleveland got my back” was published in The Players’ Tribune. In it he looks back on being raised in Georgia by his grandmother, Brenda Weaver, and how the love he felt from Cleveland fans motivated him in his rehab.Chubb had a similar knee injury when he was a sophomore at Georgia. The work ethic he needed in both rehabs came from what he learned from his grandmother.“When I say she taught us the value of hard work…. Let me paint the picture for you,” Chubb wrote. “She had this hill in the back of her house. Like a bank, real steep, with all these plants and gravel and stuff. In the summertime, she used to have me and my brother go out there and do landscaping. She’d have us picking weeds from underneath the rose bushes. No gloves, mind you.”Chubb wrote he and his brother were ordered to put all the rocks on the bank into buckets. Then she told them to empty the rocks back onto the bank.“Take this rake. Rake all the rocks. I want ’em smooth.” Chubb’s grandmother told them.“I don’t even know what the purpose was,” Chubb wrote. “It was some kind of grandma lesson that I will never fully understand. But you know what? When we were done, it honestly looked amazing. It was like one of those Japanese Zen gardens, bro. And it was one of the best workouts of my life.”Chubb described in detail his rehab in the Players’ Tribune article. Before the injury, his 2024 contract was not guaranteed. General manager Andrew Berry repeatedly said the Browns wanted Chubb back after the injury, but the salary had to be renegotiated to reflect that Chubb would not be ready for the entire season.“When my agent called me to tell me the news (of a contract agreement), he said, ‘I’ve never actually had a front office tell me anything like this,’” Chubb wrote. “‘But they said that part of the reason they never entertained cutting you is because of how much you mean to the city.’”“That really meant the world to me,” Chubb continued. “Look, I know the deal. I had no guaranteed money left. The Browns had all the leverage. They could’ve left me high and dry, like (happens to) so many guys in this league. But they had my back. You all had my back.“That’s enough talking for me.
