On Friday evening, former President Donald Trump took to X (formerly Twitter) to post a lengthy tweet promising a brutal crackdown on immigrants across the country. His tweet is now being condemned for both its caustic tone and for invoking a centuries-old law that would allow Trump to round up and detain legal immigrants. (Photo credit: Gage Skidmore)

Donald Trump gave a rambling answer when a migrant farmer who was born in Mexico and now lives in the United States asked him at a town hall Wednesday who would do that job if he followed through with threats of mass deportation .

Trump repeated campaign talking points to an audience member at the Univision town hall that African American and Hispanic populations are losing jobs because “tremendous numbers” of illegal immigrants are coming into the country from mental institutions, insane asylums and jails.

“The African American population and the Hispanic population in particular are losing jobs now because millions of people are coming in,” Trump said in response to a 64-year-old farmer’s question about his deportation plan. “So, they’re coming in but they’re also coming in largely and (in) tremendous numbers, coming in, out of mental institutions – they’re emptying out mental institutions – they’re emptying out insane asylums, that’s a step above a mental institution…they’re emptying out jails.”

The moment came as Jorge Velazquez, who was born in Mexico but now lives in Santa Maria, California, asked Trump a question that was translated for the former president from Spanish: “If you deport these people who would do that job and what price would we pay for food?”

Trump took his nearly 4-minute answer a step further when he added, “the jail population throughout the world has come way down and it’s all coming into the United States of America.”

“So, we want workers, and we want them to come in, but we want them to come in legally, they have to love our country, love you, love our people,” Trump said.

He concluded by saying the Biden administration has “totally lost control.”

“It’s the worst president and the worst vice president that we have ever had in this country. What they have done to our country in terms of hurting it – our farmers by the way are dying…four years ago our farmers, including you were doing great," he said.

“…But we want people to come in, but we don’t want murders,” Trump continued. “We have to have people that are great people come into our country."
