DES MOINES, Iowa — On Sunday, October 13, WHO 13’s Cinthia Naranjo honored and celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month during a half-hour special.

Hispanic Heritage starts September 15 through October 15. It coincides with the Independence days of several Latin American countries and Mexico.

The celebration started out as a week in 1968. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation. Twenty years later, Ronald Regan extended it to a month.

Polk County leaders including, Connie Boesen, issued a proclamation last month.

According to the Iowa Data Center , more than 220,000 Iowans identify as Latinos or Hispanics, making them the second-largest population in Iowa. The population is expected to surpass half a million by 2060.

We’re sharing the community’s contributions, showcasing their flavorful food and the arts that can be found right here in the metro.
