L.A.'s most popular farmers markets in danger of closing

The operator of L.A.'s largest farmers markets says it's at risk of shutting down and is asking locals for help.

Food Access L.A. , which operates eight markets, including Hollywood , Atwater Village , Echo Park , and Compton , has lost considerable government funding.

The organization's executive director, Jennifer Grissom , tells KNX News' Karen Adams that if they can't make up the difference, L.A. will lose a vital staple, especially in underserved communities.

"It really hurts your heart to know that those communities that need those markets the most are the ones that are at the most risk," Grissom said.

She says they need $12,000 a month to stay open and are hoping to generate enough donations to make things work.

"We need a sustaining base of donors," said Grissom. "In addition to the community donations, we need you to show up at the market. Come shop from these farmers, and make an effort to spend one day a week in your local community getting to know your farmers and where your produce is coming from. I know it may be an extra stop on your grocery route, but it's so worth it."

The organization's farmers markets have been a staple in L.A., providing fresh produce to the public since 1996, but Grissom said some markets could disappear as early as next year.
