He’s a Super Bowl champion, currently has the 12 most wins in league history, and as everyone knows has never had a losing season. He’s a great leader and his players seem to love him, but at the same time he hasn’t been to another Super Bowl in 16 years! In fact, it’s been 7 years since Pittsburgh has even won a playoff game! It’s time to face reality, Mike Tomlin is an OVERRATED football coach.It might sound crazy, but think about it, the Steelers are a franchise that is accustomed to winning. Not just regular season games, championships too, and that simply hasn’t been happening. Since Tomlin’s Super Bowl win 16 seasons ago, the team is 5-9 in the playoffs, and they haven’t sniffed an AFC Championship game since 2016. It just seems like preparation isn’t a focal point. And yesterday is yet another example of this, as Pittsburgh is set to play the New York Jets this Sunday, a team that just added All-Pro wideout Davante Adams and now might finally sign Haason Reddick. Their offense is going to look a lot different and instead of planning for that, Tomlin decided to reopen the teams’ QB battle saying,“[Russell Wilson] is in consideration this week. We’ll see where that leads us.” He also added, “I’ll acknowledge that Russ proved his health last week, and we’re looking hard at him this week. It is up for consideration.”The question is why? In what world do you bench a quarterback that is 4-2 that your team seems to be rallying behind after a blowout victory with a big matchup against the Jets on the horizon? It doesn’t make much sense, this alongside his postseason success, or lack thereof, is becoming hard to overlook, and it becomes even more relevant when you look back at some of the rosters Tomlin has had.Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, and Le’Veon Bell a.k.a. “The Killer B’s” were one of the greatest offensive trios the NFL had ever seen. A Hall Of Fame quarterback (arguably the best in franchise history) alongside two of the best skill position players of their generation surely should’ve captured at least one Lombardi Trophy, right? Nope, they never even got the chance to play for one! Yes the Patriot Dynasty was at full power, but Big Ben and company couldn’t even reach what felt like inevitable dates with Tom Brady in the title games. In their four playoff runs together, “The Killer B’s” met New England only once in the 2016 AFC Championship, where they would lose. Who’s fault is that?Besides failing with some of the league’s best rosters, the Steelers seem dead set on playing smash mouth, hard nosed football. Running the ball down the other team’s throat and playing stifling defense seems like a great idea, until you remember what year it is. It’s 2024 and this is the modern NFL, high powered offense and innovative play calling are the name of the game! Tomlin’s strategy of running the ball and playing hard defense is simply outdated and all this does is limit the team’s ceiling. Sure it gives them a steady floor, but that doesn’t win you Super Bowls, especially when your “stifling” defenses have allowed 35.0 points per game in the playoffs.There’s a reason Tomlin seems to avoid scrutiny or the hot seat, and that is the Steeler legacy. The team has a rich history of success which has created a passionately loyal fan base, this is great for team culture and identity, but has hindered the team recently. It seems to shield Tomlin from criticism, he seems to have a longer leash due to the team already having a league record 6 Lombardi trophies. The fact that he’s the head coach of a storied franchise has allowed to remain in charge despite some very below average seasons that have not met the expectations of a prestigious organization like Pittsburgh.On to the most notable “accomplishment” in Tomlin’s lengthy tenure, his streak of 17 consecutive non-losing seasons. It is nothing to look over, Tomlin has kept some very questionable teams competitive, but it is also an example of consistency without any greatness. Never having a losing season sounds all good and dandy until you look and see a large portion of those seasons ended with an 8-8 or 9-7 record. Mediocrity looks to have become “the standard” with deep playoff runs taking a back seat role. There’s a difference between playing to win and playing not to lose, and the Steelers aren’t sure what they want to do.Now I in no way am trying to discredit the man, you don’t stick around as head coach of a team like the Steelers for 17 years for no reason. But his lack of true success means there is a tough conversation to have, Tomlin is under contract through 2027 and if nothing changes there’s a chance he might not make it to then</div></body>
