BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Former One Direction singer Liam Payne, 31, whose chart-topping British boy band generated a global following of swooning fans, was found dead Wednesday after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, local officials said.

Buenos Aires police confirmed in an official statement that Liam Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel, located in the trendy Palermo district of Argentina’s capital. The fall resulted in “extremely serious injuries,” and despite immediate medical attention, Payne was pronounced dead at the scene. The statement further detailed that the severity of the injuries left no chance for resuscitation, marking the tragic end of the singer’s life.

Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, said in a statement to The Associated Press that Payne “had jumped from the balcony of his room.” Police rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5 p.m. local time, he said, warning of an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

The hotel manager, in a 911 call obtained by the Associated Press, reported a chaotic situation, stating they had “a guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol.” The manager described how Payne was “destroying the entire room” and urgently requested assistance, emphasizing the need for immediate help. As the call progressed, the manager’s tone grew increasingly anxious, highlighting the presence of a balcony in the room, which added to the urgency of the situation.
