Chicago Freeze Warning: Temps Dip to 28°F Across Northern Illinois and Indiana

Freezing conditions overnight pose risks to crops, outdoor plants, and plumbing across Illinois and northwest Indiana.

Freezing Temperatures Sweep Across Northern Illinois and Indiana

[CHICAGO, IL] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:33 AM CDT on October 17, 2024.

Freeze Warning in Effect Until 9 AM for Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana

A Freeze Warning is in place until 9 AM CDT (10 AM EDT) this morning across portions of north central, northeast, and east central Illinois, as well as northwest Indiana. With temperatures plunging as low as 28°F, frost and freezing conditions are expected to impact sensitive crops, plants, and exposed plumbing throughout the region.

The warning does not extend to downtown Chicago or areas directly along Lake Michigan, where the urban heat island effect will provide slight temperature relief. However, outlying communities, including Rockford, Joliet, Valparaiso, and Kankakee, are at high risk.

Frost and Freeze Conditions Could Damage Plants and Plumbing

Residents in the affected areas are urged to cover plants or bring them indoors overnight to minimize damage. Farmers and gardeners should prepare for potential crop losses, and homeowners should drain or insulate outdoor plumbing to prevent freezing. The sub-freezing conditions are expected to last until the early morning hours, with temperatures rising through the day.

Weather Outlook: Calm Days Ahead Following Overnight Freeze

Following the freeze warning, no further hazardous weather is expected through Tuesday, providing a break from the recent weather concerns. However, cooler fall temperatures will continue to dominate the area, with nighttime frost remaining a possibility in the coming days.
