Female Moonshiners

Dazzled by the wealth and luxury in which successful bootleggers revel, women in large numbers are turning to manufacturing and selling moonshine whiskey in West Virginia. This is the belief of officials of branches of the state prohibition department and of Federal authorities. As proof of their contention, they point to the scores of arrests of the fairer sex throughout the state in recent weeks upon charges of dealing extensively in the illicit business of making and selling liquor.

Great Airship Comes Across

The second greatest accomplishment in aerial navigation was made this week, when the great German Zeppelin, ZR-3, built for the United States by the German government as a part of a settlement of war crimes, was delivered to its hanger at Lakehurst, N. J. under its own power from Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Temporary Injunction

The Summers County Court has won a temporary injunction against the Pocahontas Tanning Company and the Union Tanning Company of Marlinton and Durbin, prohibiting them from polluting the waters of the Greenbrier River.

1949 – 75 Years Ago

A Large Turnip

Wallace Flint brought to our office a few days ago a turnip that Mrs. Flint raised in her garden near Lewisburg. It weighed two pounds, 12 ounces and measured 18 inches in circumference and was sound and healthy.

Opening Of Music Store

Over 1,000 people last Saturday attended the grand opening of Lewisburg Music store. The main attractions of the opening were featuring of Bob Black, who played popular and semi-classical selections on the beautiful ebony grand piano in the window of the store, and the Hill Billy band of Tex McGuire, which gathered crowds of people on the street with its ballads and barn-dance specialties.

Yarid Building Completed

The S. G. Yarid building on Court Street in Lewisburg has been completed and is now open. The tile building is of two story design with 18 up-to-date offices on the second floor, and two full size store rooms on the first floor. Each office and store room is independently heated and completely fire proof, having tile floors and steel framed windows. The building is Lewisburg’s latest and is probably the best one in town.

1974– 50 Years Ago

Truman Wright Retires At Greenbrier

The Chessie System, owners of the Greenbrier Hotel, has announced the retirement of E. Truman Wright, President of the hotel. He has served in administrative capacities at the Greenbrier for twenty years, and was named President of the White Sulphur Springs Company in 1971. The railroad has announced that John S. Lanahan, one of its vice-presidents, as been named the Greenbrier’s new president. Lanaham has been a vice-president of the Braniff International Hotel, and was President of Flagler Systems, operators of the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida.

Republican Party In Danger Of Extinction

President Ford said the Republican Party is in danger of extinction and asked the voters to save it on Election Day. “A catastrophic defeat as some forecasters are predicting for the Republican Party could write the obituary of the GOP,” Ford told 4,000 Republicans. Ford’s concern appeared to reflect reports that despite the departure of Richard Nixon, Republican candidates are in dire jeopardy this year, especially in key states such as New York, California and Michigan.

Students Will Have A Full Schedule

The 36 students attending the Greenbrier College of Osteopathic  Medicine have a full schedule ahead of them, according to officials at the newly-opened facility. The graduates of the school will be Practicing Family Physicians, concerned with the total health care delivery system to the family in areas characterized by diminishing resources and limited available medical resources.

No Bed Tax Until Gambling Issue Is Decided

Greenbrier County will not be implementing a hotel/motel tax, at least not for now. On Tuesday, the Greenbrier County Commission voted 2-1 to delay any action on the proposed 3% bed tax until December of 2000. Jack Damioli, director of operations at The Greenbrier, said if a hotel/motel tax were implemented, it would have a detrimental effect on the resort. He said The Greenbrier, which is a five-star, five-diamond resort, employs a little over 1,700 people, and noted that it is not only the largest employer in the county, but is also one of the largest employers in the state.

School Board To Deed Property For Use As Animal Shelter Site

The Greenbrier County Board of Education approved the purchase of land by the Greenbrier County Commission on behalf of the Greenbrier County Humane Society for a new animal shelter.  Stephen Baldwin, superintendent of Greenbrier County schools, said the one-acre site is located along Route 60 near British United Turkeys of America.

East Golf Team Takes Regional

The Greenbrier East golf team won the Region V Tourney at Pipestem, giving the Spartans a berth in next week’s State Tournament. East shot a 314 team score, beating second place Princeton by 14 strokes. For the Spartans, Steve Baldwin, Justin Beard and Adam Loving shot 78s and Justin Weikle 80.
