A "successful" cyberattack can be as devastating as a mechanical failure.</li><li>Third-party hackers look to target F-1 teams for three main reasons: to steal sensitive data through various forms of IP theft, ransomware, malware and insider data leaks. As well as to disrupt communications and services, and to sabotage operations.</li><li>Remember, these teams collect vast amounts of telemetry data from their racing cars, which are used to develop strategies and optimize equipment. With over 300 sensors on each racing car, engineers are able to record driver and vehicle data in real-time (lap timing, positional data, weather data, tire temperature, engine performance, etc.) in order to make split-second decisions.</li></ul>Biggest Cyber Attacks in F1 History according to Rossow<ul><li>July 2024: FIA victimized by phishing attack on 2 personal email accounts; CrowdStrike's global outage impacted Mercedes, Aston Martin, Williams Racing and McLaren.</li><li>2021: Williams Racing experienced a data breach, where information about an unreleased augmented reality app for an upcoming car launch was leaked. The app would allow fans and consumers to explore a 3D projection of the new car in their homes. The F1 mobile app was hacked and began sending out cryptic SMS push notifications to fans about "checking their own security :) "</li><li>2012: Lewis Hamilton, during his tenure with Mercedes, claimed he was being treated unfairly as compared to a teammate and prematurely shared/leaked he and his teammate's qualifying telemetry data in a Twitter post ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix.</li><li>2007: A former Ferrari engineer leaked team data to McLaren ahead of the 2007 Constructors Championship, which included radio codes, testing data, design drawings. McLaren who attempted to use this data was hit with a record $100 million USD fine, the largest fine in sports history and was disqualified from the Constructors Championship race.
