Packers urged to trade for former first-round pick to bolster defense

The Green Bay Packers are 4-2 and in a tight race for the NFC North. They could strike a trade to improve their defense before the November 5 trade deadline.

While predicting players the Cleveland Browns should trade, and who should be interested, FanSided's Wynston Wilcox suggested the Packers should trade for Greg Newsome II.

"Unfortunately, he’s not worth as much as his former first-round selection suggests. That doesn’t mean the Browns can’t get anything for him, just may not be as profitable of a move as it could have been," wrote Wilcox.

Newsome was the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has played in 42 games and recorded two interceptions. The Browns already traded Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills, and others could follow.

The Packers secondary has been great so far this season. They've created turnovers in bunches. However, they have dealt with some injuries. The Packers could use a player like Newsome to bring some depth behind Jaire Alexander and Keisean Nixon. Newsome has underperformed, making him a cheaper option as well.

"Greg Newsome II has more unique celebrations than he does pass breakups and interceptions combined," wrote Wilcox. "I’m sure Browns fans love the enthusiasm, but if he focused more on guarding his man and not on unnecessary emotions, he might be worth more in the trade market."

The Packers have already made a change at kicker, showing that no part of their team will be a weak link. Adding Newsome could solidify the bench in case of injuries.
