I first came across this recipe while browsing for homemade bread alternatives, and I was immediately hooked by how easy it was to make tortillas from scratch. Plus, it’s so much better than store-bought ones, with a softness and flavor you can’t beat. Special thanks to MMM Recipes for this fantastic guide that I’m excited to share with you today. Once you try it, you’ll never want to go back to pre-packaged tortillas again.

    A Taste of Tradition

Tortillas have been a staple in Latin American cuisine for centuries, particularly in Mexico where they are used in countless traditional dishes such as tacos, quesadillas, and burritos. Originally made from corn, flour tortillas gained popularity in Northern Mexico and Texas, where wheat was more readily available. Today, they are enjoyed worldwide, and making them at home allows you to capture the authentic flavor and freshness that only homemade tortillas can provide.

    Ingredients:

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
    • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 3/4 cup warm water

    Instructions:

    1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir these dry ingredients together to ensure they are well mixed.
    2. Slowly add the vegetable oil and warm water, mixing continuously until a dough forms. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
    3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes. This helps the dough relax, making it easier to roll out.
    5. After the dough has rested, divide it into 12 equal-sized balls. Using a rolling pin, roll each ball into a thin, 8-inch circle.
    6. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30 seconds per side, or until puffy and lightly browned. You’ll know they’re done when they develop beautiful brown spots and puff up slightly.
    7. To keep them warm and soft, wrap the cooked tortillas in a towel as you finish the batch.

    Tips for Perfect Tortillas:

    • Healthier Option: Swap all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a more nutritious version of this recipe.
    • Flavor Twist: You can add herbs like cilantro or spices such as paprika to the dough for an extra flavor boost.
    • Consistency Tip: If the dough feels too dry, add a small splash of water. If it’s too sticky, dust it with a bit of flour.

    Pro Tips:

    • For the best results, make sure your skillet is hot before adding the tortillas. A hot skillet ensures that the tortillas cook quickly and puff up properly.
    • If you like a softer tortilla, don’t cook them for too long. They should only be lightly browned.

    Serving Suggestions:

These tortillas are perfect for classic tacos, burritos, or even as a simple side with butter and honey. You can also use them to make quesadillas, wrap sandwiches, or as a base for homemade chips!
