Victor Wembanyama’s New Comments Should Warn the NBA

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama lived up to the hype in his rookie season in the NBA.

He ran away with the Rookie of the Year plum after putting up 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-best 3.6 blocks per game. He finished second to compatriot Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

But his maiden campaign wasn't without challenges. He had to adjust to playing with a minutes restriction at one stretch and getting left out on offense at times. Fans called out other Spurs players for not finding Wembanyama.

Still, the 7-foot-4 No. 1 overall pick kept his head up and showcased his frightening potential.

Heading into his second season, he is expected to be given a heavier load, as the Spurs look to return to the playoffs after a five-year absence.

News flash for the rest of the NBA: Wembanyama is ready to take over the league.

“Expanding my game is not thinking twice when you want to do something crazy," said Wembanyama in a story from Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix . "I don’t think I’ve had one game where I really applied everything. Not one."

As the story noted, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said the 20-year-old Wembanyama worked with eight to 10 different coaches this offseason to make him a more well-rounded player.

"I want eventually to have a wide variety of tools that I’ve really mastered," said the Spurs star. "I don’t want to have a role on the court. I don’t want to be the shot-blocker. I don’t want to be the scorer. I don’t want to be the playmaker.

"I want to be all of this at once.”

Year Two of the Wemby Experience will kick off when the Spurs take on the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 24.
