Out and about Oct. 17–23

Here are my picks from the myriad “before the holidays” events happening this weekend. Choose from dance to music to art, and films, and more.

Thursday, Oct. 17

Smuin Ballet’s Dance Series 1 continues at Fort Mason featuring Renaissance by Amy Seiwert, set to music by Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble ; the world premiere of ByChance by new Smuin choreographers, Jennifer Archibald and Matthew Neenan; and the Last Glass by Matthew Neenan, set to music by indie-rock band Beirut . Through Sunday. Tickets from $25.

If you haven’t been to the Keys Jazz Bistro in the former 1950’s El Matador space in North Beach, check it out — they host four nights of performances each week and offer a menu of food and libations, including happy hour. Tonight hear renowned jazz musicians Ralph Moore and Roy McCurdy . 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets $35.

Friday, Oct. 18

Get a start on Halloween at Sundown Cinema’s Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas screening at McLaren Park. Pack a picnic or feast from the local food trucks, and enjoy the preshow entertainment. 5 p.m. (film at 6p.m.). Free admission.

Saturday, Oct. 19

Connect with more than 130 participating artists and their work at the Shipyard Open Studios , the country’s oldest and largest artist studio community. Enjoy live entertainment, family fun, a shipyard history tour, and a special illumination and sound performance event of the Hunters Point Shipyard Crane (6–10 p.m.) following the open studios (11 a.m.–6 p.m.) Through Sunday. Those who appreciate the fine art of letterpress printing, bookbinding, and typecasting will want to visit the Arion Press Open House at its new location in Fort Mason (Building A, Gallery 308). There will be hands-on letterpress and binding activities, an exhibition featuring artwork from Arion’s upcoming Fables of Aesop publication, and more. 2–5 p.m. Free admission; reserve here .

Sunday, Oct. 20

Enjoy an elegant reception followed by a four-course feast prepared by 30 of the Bay Area’s most acclaimed restaurants at the Foodwise Sunday Supper: A Farm to City Feast , which supports Foodwise’s farmers’ markets, food access initiatives, and education programs. Tickets here .

While it’s likely you’ve driven by St. Mary’s Cathedral with its dramatic white marble roofline on Gough Street, but did you know it hosts Sunday Afternoon Musical Meditations ? Today features classical guitarist Christian Laremont . Its impressive interior is quite conducive to a musical meditations. 4 p.m. Suggested donation $10.

Here’s a literal out and about event for your Sunday: the 4th Annual Sunday Streets Phoenix Day , which is over a dozen community-led block parties with art and music, and more across the city. Hit them all with the Cross Town Ride (10 a.m.–3 p.m.). Noon–5 p.m. Free admission.

Tuesday, Oct. 22

Was it Colonel Mustard in the library with a candlestick or Miss Scarlett in the ballroom with a dagger? Based on the 1985 movie and inspired by the board game, this live production of Clue is sure to be entertaining. Through Sunday, Oct. 27 at the Currant Theatre . Tickets from $50.

Wednesday, Oct. 23

For opera, medieval literature, and romantics, Wagner’s version of the tragic and classic courtly love story, Tristan and Isolde , has three additional performances through Nov. 5. Tickets from $34.
