Rich, Decadent Chocolate Bread with Slivered Almonds: Not Too Sweet Chocolate Dessert

I would have chocolate bread for breakfast or dessert, to be honest. I'd eat this alone with a cup of coffee but, you could easily pair it with icecream, fresh fruit, and a dollop of whipped cream.

If you're looking for a chocolate dessert that's a little different and not your traditional brownie, cupcake, cake or cookie, try this decadent chocolate bread.

    You will not be disappointed.

    Ingredients

    For the Bread:

    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar)
    • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)

    For the Topping:

    • 1/4 cup slivered almonds
    • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)

    Directions

    • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
    • Prepare the Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    • Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and melted butter. Mix until well combined. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and buttermilk until smooth.
    • Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. If using, fold in the chocolate chips.
    • Transfer to the Pan: Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
    • Add the Topping: Sprinkle the slivered almonds evenly over the top of the batter. If desired, sprinkle with an additional tablespoon of granulated sugar for extra sweetness and crunch.
    • Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top is browning too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil.
    • Cool and Serve: Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy!

    What do you think?

Would you try this chocolate bread dessert?
