Craig Breslow Admits He Botched The Chris Sale Trade

What has Craig Breslow gotten right? It’s a question I ask myself frequently. If the Red Sox are going to get back in contention, Breslow needs to get his act together quickly. If you’re someone who disagrees, I dare you to watch this video and tell me what’s incorrect about what’s transpired after.

The Chris Sale trade is officially a disaster. Sale is going to win the NL Cy Young Award and Vaughn Grissom was a total bust during his first year in Boston.

“I think the framework, at the time, was sound,” Breslow said on NESN’s “310 To Left” podcast . “… That was a decision that was made with the longer-term focus in mind as much as 2024. It absolutely hurts that Chris Sale was not pitching the way that he had all season in a Red Sox uniform this year and it’s really easy to play the ‘what if’ game. I think we have to evaluate the process, evaluate the decision that it did and also recognize we are now in a different moment in time. And exclusively looking at the future is not something that we should be prepared to do as we embark on this offseason heading into 2025. Otherwise, I think fans would be rightfully frustrated with this continued push-off into the future (of) the window of contention.”

How Does Craig Breslow View, Vaughn Grissom?

I’ll be the first to admit; I thought this trade would turn out better for Boston. With that said, it wouldn’t have been the trade I made if I were going to part with Sale. None of that’s hindsight bias. The Red Sox are loaded with middle infield prospects and unless Grissom turned into an elite option at second base, the trade really didn’t accomplish anything. The problem with Grissom is that he doesn’t bring any power to the table. He has five career homers in 350 plate appearances. If that doesn’t change in a drastic way, Grissom will prove to be a waste of time. Sad but true.
