Brad Holmes Looks For Defining Moment With Detroit Lions

Brad Holmes is in his fourth season as the General Manager of the Detroit Lions. Holmes and Dan Campbell are why the Lions franchise is no longer the laughingstock of the NFL. Between Holmes' player acquisitions and Campbell's kneecap-biting mentality, Detroit has become one of the NFL's toughest opponents. With the recent injury to superstar Aidan Hutchinson, could the next move, or lack thereof, be the defining moment of Brad Holmes' tenure?

    Brad Holmes' Eye for Talent

Since coming to Detroit, General Manager Brad Holmes hasn't missed on many draft picks. In fact, Holmes may be considered one of the best NFL scouts regarding drafting in the league. Holmes has brought in so many talented players; it's hard to believe all of these guys were drafted by one genius scout. Brad Holmes drafted possibly the best starting tackle, Penei Sewell, in his first draft as GM. He also drafted superstar Aidan Hutchinson, who (besides injury) is becoming one of the most exciting defensive players in the league. Hutch was on pace for well over 20 sacks this season before breaking his leg.

Brad Holmes had the steal of the draft in 2021, getting Amon-Ra St. Brown in the fourth round. St. Brown has quickly become one of the best receivers in the league, being a consistent target for Quarterback Jared Goff. Holmes was able to draft Tight End Sam LaPorta out of "Tight End University" Iowa. LaPorta was off to a slow second season but is starting to get into a rhythm with Goff.

Holmes also took a swing, trading up to get Jameson Williams, which fans were concerned about, but Jamo has proven that he has great speed and a knack for big plays. Not to mention his draft picks of Alim McNeill, Terrion Arnold, Kerby Joseph, and Brian Branch, who all start on this young, talented defense.

Looking To Define the Holmes Era

Brad Holmes is placed in an interested position this season. The Detroit Lions sit at a record of 4-1 and are at the top of many analysts' power rankings. The Lions and Super Bowl were never in the same sentence before the Brad Holmes regime. The window for the championship is open but may not be as open as it once seemed with the injury to Aidan Hutchinson. Fans are questioning if Holmes should be making a move to replace the All-Pro player. Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby's names have been floating around, especially after the moves the Browns and Raiders made this past week, dealing star receivers.

Names like Trey Hendrickson and Za'Darius Smith have also been rumored on the Lions' watch list for possible trade targets. The Detroit Lions' unique positioning of being a Super Bowl contender without their best player has fans begging for Brad Holmes to make a move. Holmes and company, do not want to mortgage the future by giving away future assets that may be required to acquire one of these talented players.

Holmes is considered a great GM when it comes to the draft, but what about trades? Brad Holmes is responsible for the Stafford/Goff trade, which resulted in a franchise quarterback and multiple draft picks to go with it. Holmes has until the November 5 trade deadline to figure things out.

    Final Thoughts

Brad Holmes has hit home run after home run when it comes to the draft. The Lions have never been in a position to be a serious threat to the Super Bowl. This could be the defining moment of the Holmes Era. The team could stand pat with the "next man up" mentality and see what they got internally, or the team could make a big move to help replace Hutch. If Holmes doesn't make a move and the Lions win, he's a genius, but if the team fails without Hutchinson, he would be crushed for not making a move.

If Brad Holmes does make a move, this could not only keep Detroit as a favorite for the title but could also give Hutchinson the "Bash Brother" he needs. Years from now, this could be the most pivotal point in Detroit Lions history, did they make the right move and how long is the Super Bowl window open for this team?
