Greek Ruins Emerge From The Depth Of Lake For The First Time In Decades

In popular movies, it’s not uncommon for hidden treasures and entire cities to be discovered. As unlikely as it may seem for that to happen in real life, it does more often than you think. Most of the time, though, it’s on a much smaller scale . It’s no wonder, then, that re-emerged Greek ruins found under a lake have captured world-wide attention.

This lost Greek village, called Kallio, was first submerged in water more than 40 years ago. To many, this sounds like a different version of the lost city of Atlantis. But the thing about this Greek village is that many people were aware of its existence and location. That’s because the flooding of this area was very much intentional. But why would they intentionally flood a village? Turns out, this man-made reservoir was needed so those in the surrounding areas would have enough access to water. Since this plan was completed in the ’70s, it appears to have been a success… but not without some hiccups along the way.

Greek Ruins Reveal the History of This Man-Made Reservoir

Most of the time, a drought here and there is no big deal. But a lack of rain this summer led to Lake Mornos drying up so much that Kallio is once again visible. This is only the second time that a drought has led to a reveal like this one. While experts say this is the result of climate change, Greek authorities insist that this isn’t a cause for alarm just yet.

“A part of me just went: Atlantis?!” someone admits in the comments, with another adding , “Reminds me of the town ruins from Zelda Breath of the Wild .”
