In a pivotal stride towards enhancing public safety, the Mishawaka Fire Department has officially opened the doors to its new Fire Station #2, a state-of-the-art facility designed to better serve the community.

Situated on East McKinley Avenue, the new station replaces an outdated structure that had served the city for over six decades. This $12 million project, made possible through a unique partnership with the School City of Mishawaka, included the acquisition of 3.9 acres of land sold to the fire department for just $1. In return, traffic patterns for school pick-ups and drop-offs were improved, showcasing a collaborative effort beneficial to both the school system and the broader Mishawaka community.

“Every second counts in an emergency, and this station places our first responders in an optimal position to react swiftly and effectively,” stated Mayor Dave Wood, highlighting the importance of the new facility.

Spanning an impressive 23,000 square feet, Fire Station #2 prioritizes firefighter safety and wellness. The facility boasts five apparatus bays, 12 individual dorm rooms with dedicated changing areas, six private bathrooms, a spacious kitchen, and a modern weight and training room. Notably, one of the training rooms will also serve as a community space for meetings and gatherings, fostering engagement between the fire department and local residents.

“This new station embodies progress, growth, and our unwavering commitment to providing the highest level of protection and service to the citizens of Mishawaka,” expressed Bryon Woodward, Fire Chief.

Its strategic location next to Liberty Elementary School enhances community outreach, featuring a “Survive Alive House” where students can learn vital fire safety and prevention techniques. Additionally, a donated baby box is available, further emphasizing the station's community-oriented mission.

To safeguard firefighters’ health, the facility integrates advanced technology aimed at reducing exposure to contaminants linked to cancer. “We are proud to have included these protective measures. This station is equipped with the latest technology, designed for the future, ensuring our firefighters have the tools and environment they need to serve at the highest level,” added Wood.

With a rising call volume for Engine Two and Medic Two, which handled over 10,000 calls for service in 2022, officials assert that this investment is crucial for the department's future growth and effectiveness.

“We are here to serve, and we promise to respond. We appreciate the community’s support in making this project a reality,” concluded Woodward, as he anticipates that firefighters will be fully operational in the new facility by next week.
