Urban Meyer's Message to Ryan Day After Brutal Oregon Loss Revealed

The Week 7 college football slate was loaded with thrilling matchups, and fans were treated to a clash of titans that is now a conference rivalry game after the latest wave of conference realignment.

The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes went West to take on the No. 3 Oregon Ducks in a Big Ten clash that attracted nearly 10 million viewers. While Ohio State was favored by 3.5 points, the team left Autzen Stadium with its first loss of the season.

The Ducks were able to hold onto a 32-31 victory after Ohio State quarterback Will Howard could not get down in time after scrambling to set up a field goal, as time expired as he slid to the ground on 3rd-and-20. Social media went after Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, who fell to 2-6 against Top 5 teams, but there was one person in particular who had positive words for him.

His predecessor and coaching legend, Urban Meyer. The former Ohio State and Florida coach revealed on "The Triple Option" podcast that he texted Day after the loss with some words of encouragement.

“They went on the road," Meyer said . I actually texted coach Day this, ‘You went on the road, one of the most difficult — I never played there, but I coached there — I hear it’s one of the most difficult places. You took the team’s best shot and you were seriously one yard away from winning that game.'"

While being close doesn't ease the pain of the fans, Meyer's comments certainly have to at least help take some pressure off of Day who is constantly being put on the hot seat by the fan base.

It's also worth noting that with the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, this team's journey is far from over. The loss was also respectable enough for them to only drop to No. 4 in the country, so all things considered, things could have been worse.

The Buckeyes will have this weekend off before they host a talented Nebraska team next week. If they are able to win out, which would include wins against No. 3 Penn State, No. 16 Indiana and No. 24 Michigan, it feels safe to assume that fans will forget about the early loss to Oregon.

Brutal? One point loss all due to Oregons cheating coach. The immediate rule change by the NCAA confirmed it.
