Stunning Riot Games Layoffs of More Employees in 2024

Recently, there have been massive layoffs from major game studios, but the Riot Games layoffs seem to have undergone another round. This was done supposedly so that the League Of Legends team would grow 'even larger than it is today'. The League of Legends' Developer, Riot Games, through an X post, announced another round of layoffs while simultaneously promising the larger growth of the league team to gamers.

    Riot Games Layoffs X Post

The X post was posted by the co-founder of the Triple-A Studio, Riot Games, who goes by the name Marc Merrill, who said, "[Riot Games] has made changes to our teams and how we work to make sure we can keep improving the League experience now and for the long term."

Merrill goes on to say, "As part of the changes, we've made the tough decision to eliminate some roles [through the Riot Games layoffs]. This isn't about reducing headcount to save money—it's about making sure we have the right expertise so that League continues to be great for another 15 years and beyond. While team effectiveness is more important than team size, the League team will eventually be even larger than it is today as we develop the next phase of [League Of Legends]."

    Expenses

Merrill confirms that the team isn't trying to reduce expenses by lowering the headcount through the Riot Games layoffs, but is trying to increase the team's effectiveness. To further acknowledge that fact, Merrill says in a follow-up post, "While we're on the subject of team size, I want to talk a little about both size and budget, and why they aren’t the right way to measure whether a team will be successful."

"We’ve definitely been memed in the past for talking about budgets, and rightly so. Success isn’t about throwing more people or money at a challenge, [the real priority] is having the right team, right priorities, and a sustainable approach to delivering what players need." "If we’re solving the wrong problems, more resources won’t fix it," Merrill wrote. "It’s about building smarter and healthier, not just bigger."

    Conclusion

According to PC Gamer, 27 developers on League of Legends are being laid off along with five people in Riot's publishing business, as reported by a Riot's representative. The staff layoffs, if analyzed, come less than a year just after Riot laid off 530 employees and closed its Riot Forge program, which it launched in 2019 to use external studios to make single-player League of Legends games.

In other to maintain a long-term focus for players, CEO Dylan Jadeja confirms that what is being done is a necessity, and not something done to meet quarterly earning numbers or to appease shareholders. Dylan explains that Riot is "a company without a sharp enough focus" and with too many projects underway that weren't paying off, so probably, this may be the right choice. After all, this isn't the first time we have heard of such a strategy, even Microsoft did some layoffs. Riot is based out of California.
