Knicks Could Reunite with Former Carmelo Anthony Trade Piece

The behavior of professional athletes off the court rarely holds implications for their free agency, potential trades, etc. But when a free agent, 16-year veteran who was drafted by the Knicks, buys a home in New York, perhaps there's something there.

Danilo Gallinari, the famed centerpiece of the 2011 blockbuster that brought Carmelo Anthony to the Big Apple is back. But will he be back with the Knicks?

Jennifer Gould of the New York Post reported that Gallinari purchased a home in Brooklyn, and that there's buzz he could sign a training camp deal with the team that drafted him sixth overall some years ago.

"The veteran forward has just signed a contract for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom home at One Williamsburg Wharf in Brooklyn, Gimme Shelter has learned," Gould wrote in an Oct. 17 exclusive . "The news comes amid buzz that the New York Knicks may sign Gallinari to a contract for training camp — 16 years after they selected him as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft."

Is there room for Gallinari on the Knicks? The roster is all-but set and Opening Night is fast approaching. The 36-year-old wouldn't be signing with New York for guaranteed playing time, nor guaranteed money. But if there's mutual interest, there are worse guys to have at the end of your bench in the NBA.

Gallinari spent the 2023-2024 season with all of the Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and Milwaukee Bucks. He averaged 5.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists over 49 regular-season appearances. This wouldn't be a blockbuster addition for New York, but it would be a smart one. Leon Rose continues to head a strong offseason for the Knicks, who look the part of championship contenders.
