After Indiana’s Department of Education released the second draft of its high school diploma proposal on October 9th, local Democratic State Representatives Chris Campbell and Sheila Klinker reacted to the latest effort to change the state’s education system.

Klinker called the second draft proposal “an improvement,” but both representatives voiced concern about the vague nature of the proposal in respective press releases.

“I hoped the second draft would clear up our concerns, but many of our questions remain unanswered,” Campbell said in the press release.

“Someone will need to track each student’s work hours and progress, but it’s unclear if that’s the role of each student, the business, or the school counselor,” Campbell said.

Among these concerns, the two also voiced concern about the impact the proposal could have on teachers. The proposal would bring another change in curriculum requirements, Klinker said in her press release.

“Our state is experiencing a teacher and counselor shortage that will make it difficult to implement these diploma changes,” Klinker said.

Klinker and Campbell encourage citizens to submit feedback to IDOE by November 8th.
