Late One Direction alum Liam Payne died after falling off his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, days after his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, left South America and headed back to Miami. However, In Touch has learned that Liam was accompanied by two mystery women in the hours before his October 16 death.

The mystery women arrived at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel on Tuesday, October 15, and “didn’t leave the hotel” until the following day, In Touch can confirm. The two women, who were not present at the time of Liam’s death, were identified and questioned by local authorities. Investigators also interviewed three members of the hotel staff.

Authorities are categorizing the mystery women as “key witnesses” into the singer’s death though they are not considered suspects.

The Wolverhampton, United Kingdom, native checked himself into the CasaSur Palermo Hotel three days prior to his death, after Kate – who had accompanied Liam throughout South America – returned home.

A hotel employee called 911 to report a guest who had “overindulged on drugs and alcohol” shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. “When he is conscious he breaks, he is breaking the whole room. Well, we need you to send someone, please,” the audio recording revealed.

By the time authorities arrived on scene, Liam was found dead in the hotel’s interior courtyard after jumping from his third-floor balcony.

“There was no possibility of resuscitating him,” authorities said. “He had extremely severe injuries that were incompatible with life due to the fall.”

In Touch has learned that an autopsy was conducted later that night and revealed Liam died of “multiple injuries and internal and external hemorrhaging.” While toxicology results are pending, leading up to his death, the “What Makes You Beautiful” artist “destroyed some objects” in his hotel room. Several substances, consistent with illegal narcotics and alcohol, as well as a cell phone and laptop, were recovered and are being investigated, In Touch can confirm. The position of Liam’s body indicated the singer may have been “in a state of semi-or total unconsciousness” at the time of his fall, In Touch has learned.

Liam and Kate, 25, were in Argentina after arriving on September 30, in order to attend his former bandmate Niall Horan’s concert on October 2. According to Kate, what was supposed to be a five-day getaway, turned into a two-week trip.

“I was so ready to leave,” she said in a TikTok video just two days before the boybander’s death. “I was just like, I need to go home.”

Liam had previously been open about his battles with drug and alcohol addiction, explaining that this days in the boy band were filled with “booze and pills” and that he had “moments of suicidal ideation.” After spending 100 days in rehab, the singer revealed he was six months sober in June 2023.

“I just kind of feel like I’ve got more of a grip on life and everything that was getting away from me … I just feel like I’ve got more of a handle on it,” he said in a YouTube video. “I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself actually because I kind of became somebody who I didn’t really recognize anymore.”

Liam was just 31 years old.
