Kirk Herbstreit Names Major College Football Fanbase That is an Embarrassment

Despite being one of the most beloved personalities in college football, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit has never been shy about ruffling some feathers with his takes.

Florida State fans are still upset with him and his stance on the Seminoles being left out of the 2023 College Football Playoff, and on Thursday, he went after the fans of a program he's quite familiar with. When making an appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show," Herbstreit called out fans of Ohio State.

The former Buckeyes quarterback blasted fans of his alma mater, specifically ones that have gone after quarterback Will Howard after the team's Week 7 loss to the Oregon Ducks. Herbstreit made it clear that he didn't appreciate the portion of fans who are getting on the Kansas State transfer after he scrambled to set up a game-winning field goal and was unable to get down in time to call a timeout.

"By the way, Will Howard taking s*** from Ohio State fans,” Herbstreit said . “Again, it’s that vocal 10 to 12, 15%, A.J. (Hawk) knows what I’m talking about. They’re an embarrassment to the fanbase.”

Despite the critical blunder that saw him lose track of time, Herbstreit was still extremely confident and complimentary of Howard.

“Will Howard took off and scrambled there. Time got away from him,” Herbstreit said. “He’s an amazing kid, who I think played pretty well, considering the environment he played in. Will Howard will have another opportunity, another chance to play. I thought so far, he’s doing a really good job of playing quarterback for Ohio State.”

While his late-game error will be remembered more, Howard still had a strong showing against a Top-20 defense. He finished the game having completed 28-of-35 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for a score.

Fans may be upset with the result, but there are still six games remaining for Ohio State. It's also worth noting that with the expansion of the College Football Playoff, Ohio State is far from out of it.
