‘Haunted Hollow’ returns for a final chapter in Clarence

CLARENCE CENTER, N.Y. (WIVB) — The sights and sounds of ‘Haunted Hollow’ in Clarence Center are back for their final chapter after six years.

“My grandchildren have encouraged us to please do one more, so we’re glad to do it, we’re having a lot of fun,” said Gary Server, aka “Scary Gary,” the host of Haunted Hollow.

For years, they were known for their walk through graveyard, lights show, haunted scenes in their garage, and Victor the talking skeleton.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun,” said Roger Whitfield, who plays Victor. “Just the noises and everything. There’s so many lights, there’s so much scary stuff going on as you walk through the cemetery.”

The Halloween display used to be a tradition for Server and his wife, aka “Bloody Mary,” until they stopped doing the display in 2018. But with the encouragement of their eleven grandkids, they’re bringing it back to life for one more Halloween.

“I mean, what could be better than family together, and that’s what we see here at the Hollow” said Server. “When we see families together enjoying themselves, they’re not on their iPads so much or their cellphones, they’re walking around together and they’re laughing, having conversations with Victor, or dancing to the light show in the driveway.”

When visitors walk through the tour or drive by and look at the lights, they can also help support other families by making a donation to Oshei Children’s Hospital.

“It’s up to them on how much they want to give, but people are pretty generous about that,” said Server.

Server says being around kids has always been a big part of his life, as a father and grandfather, but also as a retired kindergarten teacher. He started Haunted Hollow in his classroom back in 1997, creating a Halloween experience for all ages to enjoy and to remember.

“I enjoy watching it progress throughout the years, and bringing my kids around to see it,” said Daniel Decker, who was a student when Server had “Haunted Hollow” in his classroom. “It’s good to see it open up again this year. It’s sad that it will be the last year.”

The Haunted Hollow is located at 6105 Fairlane Drive in Clarence Center, and will open Friday Oct. 18. Tours will be available this weekend, next weekend, and the night of Halloween.
