It was recently announced that Maynard James Keenan will be making an appearance at this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, joining Zakk Wylde, Robert Trujillo, Chad Smith, Jack Black, Billy Idol, Jelly Roll, and others in paying tribute to 2024 inductee Ozzy Osbourne. While speaking on The Allison Hagendorf Show, Keenan spoke about his upcoming performance, saying:

“It’s terrifying – extremely terrifying. Yeah, ’cause this is for him, and his song is out of my range. So I’m gonna be struggling to hit the notes, but I got the call and so I answered.”

When hosts Hagendorf mentioned that it must be special for Keenan to take part in the ceremony considering how much of an influence Black Sabbath’s debut album had on him, he responded: “Yeah, I mean, it’s, if I’m being honest, mixed feelings. ‘Cause I’m having to come in, and a couple of other people are coming in, to sing for him, which is depressing, to have to sing for him. But that we’re able to step up and help him in this induction is inspiring. I’m glad I got the call. I’m sure a bunch of people got the call, but I think I responded first.”

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Osbourne explained the reasoning behind the eclectic list of musicians he chose to induct him, saying specifically about Keenan: “Maynard has been a true family friend since 1997. He is such a creative force. There are few artists who can keep three successful bands [Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer] going for multiple decades.”
