Food trends and hacks seem to pop up every week. For the last few months, content creators are trying a trick to make popcorn crunchier and keep the kernels from sticking to your teeth. How, you ask? They’re freezing a bag of popcorn .

We first saw this trick on Anita Wright 's Instagram page and other creators, like Nicole Nelson McLaughlin over at All Recipes also gave it a try.  The idea is to put a bag of popcorn in the freezer for a few hours to make it crunchier and help the little crunchy bits from getting stuck in your teeth.

So, does popcorn really taste better when it’s frozen? Is this food trend a do or don’t? I tested it at home to see.

What I Thought About Frozen Popcorn

I started by popping my own popcorn (because that’s my go-to method, especially on movie night) with just salt and butter. However, some videos used microwave popcorn even store-bought popcorn. No matter which kind of popcorn you use, the key is to salt it before freezing.

I added a few popped scoops to a zip-top bag, and left the other batch on the counter. I watched several videos on how long to freeze the popcorn and what to look for, but I couldn’t find a firm answer. Because there wasn’t a consensus on how long to freeze the popcorn, I started with 60 minutes, tested it, and then stuck it back in the freezer for another 30 minutes.

Just like other food experiments, I enlisted the opinion of my family members. My son was the only person who agreed that the frozen popcorn kernels didn’t stick to his teeth. However, he thought my room-temperature popcorn was crunchier. I didn’t find the frozen popcorn to be crunchier. There was a slight glide of kernels off of my teeth, but the frozen version wasn’t that spectacular in the crunch department. Maybe I need to freeze the bag longer to get the better crunch.

Overall, the frozen popcorn experiment was not as mind-blowing as I expected. But, you better believe that I’m eating both versions!
