In recent months, a new hazard has emerged in Alabama communities: the misuse of "Galaxy gas". While intended for industrial purposes, Galaxy gas has unfortunately found its way into the hands of some residents, leading to dangerous and potentially life-threatening situations.

    What Is Galaxy Gas?

According to CNN, Galaxy gas, also known as nitrous oxide (N2O), is a colorless, non-flammable gas commonly used for various legitimate purposes. In medical settings, it is often used as a mild anesthetic or pain reliever, such as in dental procedures. In the automotive world, it’s used to boost engine performance. It also has applications in food processing, serving as a propellant in whipped cream dispensers.

Why Is Galaxy Gas Dangerous to Alabamians?

Although nitrous oxide is generally safe when used correctly and in controlled environments, its misuse can pose significant risks. According to the Addiciton Center, people have been inhaling Galaxy gas to experience a brief euphoric high, commonly referred to as "huffing" or "whippits." This practice can lead to:

    1. Oxygen Deprivation: Inhaling nitrous oxide deprives the brain of oxygen, which can cause dizziness, headaches, and in severe cases, unconsciousness or even death.
    2. Long-Term Brain Damage: Repeated inhalation of nitrous oxide can lead to neurological damage. The gas interferes with vitamin B12, a vital nutrient for brain function, and can result in memory loss or other cognitive impairments.
    3. Sudden Death: In some cases, inhaling large amounts of Galaxy gas can lead to sudden cardiac arrest, a condition often referred to as "sudden sniffing death syndrome."
    4. Addiction and Dependency: Although nitrous oxide is not physically addictive, people who regularly use the substance may develop a psychological dependence, continually seeking the high it provides.

Why Is This a Growing Issue in Alabama?

Alabama residents have been increasingly exposed to the misuse of substances like Galaxy gas through social media and peer pressure. Because it is relatively easy to obtain — either from automotive shops, gas stations, medical supplies, or whipped cream canisters — the gas has become an accessible yet dangerous substance. Some people may not fully understand the risks associated with inhaling nitrous oxide, viewing it as a harmless thrill rather than hazardous.

On TikTok, typing in the word 'galaxy' will display thousands of videos of people using galaxy gas.
