DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines woman was indicted on Thursday in connection to a shooting after a chase that left the suspect dead and two officers injured.
Shawnna Marie Cunningham, 47, faces three indictments for being in possession of a firearm as a drug user as well as for aiding and abetting the possession and disposal of a firearm to a person she knew was a felon, the United States Attorney’s Office Southern District of Iowa said.
On September 16 officers with the Des Moines Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle in the 2500 block of Easton Boulevard. Police said the driver of the vehicle, identified as 37-year-old Joshua Green, briefly stopped but fled from the scene, initiating a chase with the officers. The chase eventually ended when Green’s vehicle crashed. Officers attempted to remove Green from the vehicle multiple times, but he refused. Green pulled out a handgun and began shooting at the officers. Multiple officers returned fire and Green was fatally shot.

Senior Police Officer Jacob Boekhoff was shot in the arm and Senior Police Officer Cade Moritz was shot in the head. Both officers have been released from the hospital and are recovering.
According to the US Attorney’s Office Southern District of Iowa, Cunningham was Green’s passenger during the incident. Following the shooting officers found Cunningham in possession of a methamphetamine pipe and she admitted that she used the drug.
The attorney’s office also said that Cunningham purchased the nine-millimeter pistol that Green used during the shooting. In 2021 Green was arrested and the same gun was found on his person. He was later convicted of unlawfully possessing a handgun as a felon. The following year the gun was retuned to Cunningham, but when Green was released from prison in January 2024 Cunningham gave Green the gun again, the attorney’s office said.
Cunningham faces a prison sentence of up to 15 years on each count if convicted.
