Garth Brooks' Ex-Wife Once Accused Him of Being a Serial Cheater, Won Nine-Figure Divorce Settlement

Garth Brooks' first wife, Sandy Mahl, once accused the country star of being a serial cheater, alleging that he would often disappear for "five or six days" with different women in a documentary posted just over two years ago. This news has come back to light as Brooks, 62, is currently under investigation for sexual assault by his former stylist.

According to an October 2024 report by Radar Online, Mahl shared details about Brooks' troubling patterns during their marriage, claiming he frequently engaged in extramarital affairs. "Garth has always been a very sexual person," she said. Mahl attributed his infidelity to his ego, stating it was about "proving he could look out, point and conquer."

At one point, Mahl confronted Brooks about his cheating, warning him that if he didn’t stop, she would leave him. "I told him my bags were packed, plane tickets bought, and I'm gone," she recounted. This ultimatum seemed to resonate, as Brooks remained loyal for nine additional years, during which they welcomed three daughters. Their marriage ultimately ended in 2001, with Mahl receiving a substantial $125 million divorce settlement.

Despite these allegations, Brooks has publicly stated that his infidelity brought new life into his marriage. In his own words, "The wife I got back after my infidelity was 15 times the woman I had." He emphasized that he does not advocate for cheating as a solution, yet admitted it had an unexpected positive effect on his relationship.

In his commentary, Brooks described women as "cool and as different as snowflakes," expressing that spending time with multiple partners allowed him to appreciate the diverse qualities women possess.

Brooks said, "You can be with seven or eight women and get seven or eight sides of what a woman is. Women are neat. They are enticing."

He even confessed to having feelings for his current wife, Trisha Yearwood, early in his first marriage, saying, "It's strange 'cause I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife but I'd been married for 13 months."

Reflecting on their marriage in a documentary, Mahl expressed that they simply "grew apart" over time, noting that Brooks would often be away for "eight to 10 weeks at a time."

As Garth Brooks continues to navigate the fallout from these revelations and the ongoing investigation, many Alabamians are left to ponder the implications of his actions on his legacy as a beloved country music icon.
