New streetlights and new longer lasting bulbs is just one way Windsor is looking to become more sustainable. The Greeley Tribune reports historically, Windsor’s roughly 3,100 streetlights have been owned by two energy companies: the Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association and Xcel. The town began negotiating with both companies in 2021 and finalized a deal with Poudre Valley Rural Electric — which made up roughly 40% of the town’s streetlights — earlier this month, and hopes are the town will acquire the remaining 60% of the streetlights from Xcel by the end of the year. After that acquisition is made, a third-party contractor will replace all non-LED lights with the more efficient alternatives — expected to take place next year.
