Guests at the annual Al Smith Dinner on Thursday watched in silence as Vice President Kamala Harris appeared in a bizarre comedy sketch featuring a parody of a Catholic schoolgirl after she became the first presidential candidate to decline an invitation to the event since 1984.

In the video, which was played to guests, including former President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Harris said, “Your eminence and distinguished guests, the Al Smith Dinner provides a rare opportunity to set aside partisanship–”

As Mary Katherine Gallagher a fictional Catholic schoolgirl played by Molly Shannon who appeared on SNL in the 1990s—could be seen pacing in the background, Harris turned away from the camera and asked, “Hey, what’s going on? Who was that?”

“Mary Katherine Gallagher, it’s so nice to meet you,” introduced the character.

Harris responded, “Very nice to meet you, Mary Katherine. Right now, I’m trying to record my speech for tonight’s dinner.”

“Oh yeah, I know; I just want to say that I’m Catholic, and tonight is one of the biggest dinners next to the Last Supper,” Gallagher declared.

The parody character continued, “Sometimes when I get nervous, I stick my fingers under my arms, and I smell them like that,” before sniffing her fingers in front of the vice president.

Asked whether there was anything she should not bring up in her virtual speech to the dinner, Gallagher replied, “Well, don’t lie. Thou shalt not bear false witness to thy neighbor.”

“Indeed, especially thy neighbor’s election results,” remarked Harris, in a clear dig at Trump.

Gallagher also advised Harris, “Maybe don’t say anything negative about Catholics,” to which Harris responded, “I would never do that, no matter where I was. That would be like criticizing Detroit in Detroit.”

Gallager made several other jokes, including a joke about Jesus Christ being the “fact-checker” of the evening, before asking Harris, “Does it bother you that that Trump guy insults you all the time?”

“Oh Mary Katherine, it’s very important to always remember you should never let anyone tell you who you are. You tell them who you are,” replied Harris.

The two then quoted Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.”

Guests at the dinner watched in silence as the video played and Harris’s comedy sketch received a jarring mix of both applause and boos from the audience after it concluded.

“I don’t even know what that noise you’re making is,” reacted comedian Jim Gaffigan .

Gaffigan then mocked Harris’s decision to send in a video instead of turning up in person, remarking, “Now I know how my kids felt when I FaceTimed into a piano recital they were at.”

Gaffigan also criticized the vice president’s decision not to attend the dinner, questioning, “I’m sorry, why is Vice President Harris not here?” before listing several shows and podcasts Harris did make time for.
