A sports training center with ice rinks and batting cages is aiming for a November soft opening at The Crossing Clarendon.

Corobus Sports plans to open in the 20,000-plus square foot property next to The Container Store and formerly held by bounce gym Jumping Joeys . Owner Henry White said the complex, almost all of which is underground, will offer lessons in ice hockey, baseball and softball to young people, in addition to team training and lane rentals.

“We wanted to try to offer something where right after school, [kids] can go in for lessons and have really highly qualified coaches who are experienced coaches, and help them learn,” White said.

The new complex includes two fields of synthetic ice totaling approximately 3,500 square feet, as well as two 2,000-square-foot turf spaces. Up to nine hockey lanes and up to six baseball lanes will be available to rent for 30 minutes at a time, including two HitTrax batting cages, White said.

“The [HitTrax] system is pretty cool,” White said. “There’ll be TVs behind the batting cages, and they’ll be able to take swings and turn around see how far they hit, at whichever ballpark they want to pick.”

Partnerships with professional entities in the region, including Elite Hockey Science in Reston, should provide enough personnel to coach a few hundred kids each week, he said.

While most of the coaching will come from these partnerships, White, who is currently the coach of the Capitals Academy 16U AA team, said he may appear alongside the partners during lessons. Hockey lessons are currently slated to last 40 minutes, with baseball lessons ranging between 40 and 55 minutes.

Other planned offerings include a training gym — offering strength training and conditioning — as well as a film room that might feature in birthday parties and “Kids Night Out” programming for kids ages 6 through 12.

“We’ll have a parent lounge,” White said. “We’re going to have party rooms so we’ll do parties on the weekends. We’ll do some ‘parents night out’ stuff. There’s little amenities, like skate sharpening and retail sales.”

A father and longtime hockey coach of 35 years, White said he’s excited for the area to have a facility that’s all about players honing skills. The company’s tagline, “Train like an Olympian,” is a nod to Coroebus of Elis , the first-ever recorded winner of the Olympics, for whom the complex is named, he said.

“We’re just really excited about focusing on the development of kids, the development of players,” White said. “… There’s been a missing piece here, not just in Arlington, but in general, of developing players and developing player skills and really helping them get better.”

Memberships will tentatively cost $79 monthly or $799 annually. A membership comes with discounted training sessions and services, as well as priority scheduling for lessons, rentals and events.

Further down the line, White said the complex expects to add golf and one to two other sports to its lineup of services.
