Stephen Curry may not have anything left to prove, but he and the Warriors are still in the business of sending messages. In order for the message to get delivered, this team is going to have to put together yet another special run… next week. Tonight will be the nothing more than the final dress rehearsal, a chance to get a final cost-free look at a team that is still figuring out how exactly to best fit it all together. Good news, then, that everyone appears to be healthy and suiting up tonight. Well, maybe everyone - still not much information at time of writing on Brandin Podziemski and his broken nose. In fact, it’s probably just as much of the team identity as anything else. When Curry fell to them in the draft, they went ahead and selected him, knowing that the pairing with then-current star, Monta Ellis was questionable at best. Then another pivot to bring Andrew Bogut in, followed by another one later that jettisoned Bogut and Harrison Barnes to accommodate the trade for Kevin Durant.So, how do you replace a Klay? You don’t. You embrace the chaos and let it inspire you. With a roster brimming with talent, the Dubs are shifting their focus to an even more perimeter-oriented offense. If you thought their three-point game was electric before, just wait. This is a team ready to launch, and they’re looking to turn the court into a veritable firing range. Just like Kermit’s song, this is too inherently tied into the team’s DNA for them to be anything other than their true, shot-flinging selves. The shots have been prolific all preseason, but we finally saw some cooling in that previous game in Vegas. The Warriors were a paltry 14 of 45 from deep as a team. Not even Curry was immune, hitting 3 of his 11 attempts, and ending up with 16 points off of 18 field goal attempts. The Warriors are still searching a bit. By inserting Andrew Wiggins into their starting lineup, they went a perfect 5-for-5. Five games, five different starting units. It wasn’t a huge success (net negative one point in their 11 or so minutes on the court) but neither was it disastrous enough to move the idea into the “done” pile. And I’m cool with it. Whether it works all the time or not, it’s easy to see how the coaching staff and franchise have gotten here - and why they hope it’s good enough to get them where they want to be.Let’s go for a perfect preseason, shall we? Golden State wins, Kuminga and Moody continue to make their extremely strong cases for playing time. Thank goodness Friday is here.
