A pair of political strategists faced off over Donald Trump's economic record in a contentious debate on CNN.

Democratic strategist Maria Cardona argued Friday morning that the former president's mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic had cost millions of jobs and hundreds of thousands of lives, and she said that president Joe Biden and vice president Kamala Harris had rebuilt the economy.

"Under Republican rule, with Donald Trump at the helm, he absolutely put our economy in the toilet when he refused to understand how to be the leader during a global pandemic, refusing to accept the science of Covid, lost millions of American jobs, hundreds of thousands of Americans died on his watch," Cardona said. "Businesses were shuttered, which is why you saw cities going into decline, and the fact of the matter is that under the Biden-Harris administration, those cities are coming back, including Detroit , and so she is doing both, and she's also focused on showing Republicans that it is time to turn the page."

Republican strategist Scott Jennings rejected her framing, arguing that she was "rewriting" the narrative of the pandemic's early days .

"First of all, viruses don't care who the president is, they don't care what party you're in," Jennings said. "Every Democrat and leftist in the country wanted the economy and our society shut down. More people died of Covid under Joe Biden."

Host Kate Bolduan challenged him, saying that leftists weren't the only people calling for social distancing.

"No one knew what was going on – that's what happened," she said. "We all lived this."

"Let me accept your framing of it," Jennings continued. "Then what Maria just said is complete bunk, and finally, finally, he got Operation Warp Speed, got the vaccine, Kamala Harris was saying she'd never take a Trump vaccine. I mean, honestly, to talk about leadership and what happened during the pandemic and somehow say that the virus would have gone away faster if Donald Trump hadn't been the president is a total rewriting of what happened, but whatever."

Cardona argued that Trump denied the science in his management of the pandemic, and Jennings replied with a sarcastic remark.

"I'm sure for the virus cared very deeply what he said," Jennings said.

Cardona pointed to reporting that Trump received the vaccine in secret before leaving the White House after claiming that injecting bleach might be an effective treatment, but Jennings claimed that had been debunked, and Bolduan again challenged him.

"You can't deny the actual bleach commentary," Bolduan said, as Jennings protested. "Debunked? He said it publicly."

"Oh my God, it came out of his mouth, Scott!" Cardona added, as Bolduan moved on to the next topic.

it's disingenuous to say more people died under Biden. When Biden took office COVID was no longer contained. Trump LIED even though he knew it was deadly. And the vaccine distribution was also mismanaged. He lacks leadership all the time!
