Track by Track is our recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through each song on their new release. Today, former Consequence CoSign Jordana breaks down her new album, Lively Premonition.

When Jordana chatted with us two years ago about her sophomore effort, Face the Wall , the biggest theme was “self-growth.” Now, with her new album, Lively Premonition , that growth has spawned a more developed and mature sound for the LA-based singer and songwriter.

Her crystal clear vocals and personality are still well on display, but Lively Premonition brings more organic instrumentation, folk-inflected harmonies, and a Laurel Canyon vibe that adds some extra warmth to her sunny sound. Plus, she’s brought back her violin for the first time in several years.

“Maybe it’s my LA record,” says Jordana, referencing her move to California after a brief stint in Brooklyn during her Face the Wall era. She worked on the album throughout 2023 with multi-instrumentalist and producer Emmett Kai, immersing herself in a different style of writing. “It’s about the cycle of love, heartbreak, lust, party-going, self-acceptance, connections, and rediscovering yourself over and over again,” she says.

Across the 10 tracks of Lively Premonition , Jordana draws deeper from the well of inspiration, taking cues from ’70s yacht rock and folk pop as well as the 2000s indie she grew up on. But even with more unpredictable instrumentation and melodies, Jordana is letting the light in on Lively Premonition , and she’s never sounded so radiant.

Stream Lively Premonition below, and read on for Jordana’s Track by Track breakdown.

    “We Get By”:

“We Get By” is about true love. It’s about leaving any materialistic things behind and basking in the appreciation of the truest loving from a pure ground zero — whether that be with yourself or with someone else. We could leave everything we have and still be happy.

    “Like a Dog”:

“Like a Dog” is about desperation. It’s about fawning over someone so entirely that any ounce of attention from them feeds the desire even stronger, even if that means being treated in an inhumane way… like a dog.

    “Heart You Hold”:

“Heart You Hold” is a song about growth. It’s an advisory story told from the point of view of a guardian, or an older sibling, sending away a little one to a summer camp.

    “This Is How I Know”:

“This Is How I Know” is a song about knowing and feeling true, unquestionable love from someone. It’s a song about security and utmost certainty in how this person feels about you.

    “Multitudes of Mystery”:

“Multitudes of Mystery” is a song about doing drugs at a party. It’s a song about the culture of partying and the effects of the drugs themselves. A conversation between a guy and two gals unravels, the guy attempting to woo these gals to a party with him.

    “Raver Girl”:

“Raver Girl” is a song about lust on the dancefloor. It’s about a dancing chance encounter with a charismatic girl at a nightclub, where you say not a single word, but you’re convinced you’ve fallen in love, only to have her disappear into the night… Was it only a dance, or was it something more? You didn’t even catch her name.

    “Wrong Love”:

“Wrong Love” is an upbeat song about holding onto faith in a potential love interest, despite them showing signs of disinterest. The singer ponders back and forth between questioning why the interest is playing games with them, and knowing that this dance might be a wasted endeavor. In the end, ultimately, the singer finally comes to the realization that this interest is indeed… the wrong love.

    “Anything for You”:

“Anything for You” is a breakup song. It’s a song about attempting to find yourself again after someone has depleted the energy you had in your soul. You are searching for a new self, or aiming to recover what once was there.

    “The One I Knew”:

“The One I Knew” is another breakup song. It is sung with exhaustion from a draining relationship. The former lover has already caused so much pain, that the relationship could not be mended, and it has to be ended before any more suffering leaves both sides broken.

    “Your Story’s End”:

“Your Story’s End” is… another break-up song. The singer is talking to someone who’s been hurt so much to the point of no return to love, as if it had never existed, and validating their pain, agreeing with statements of a pessimistic point of view… but how could you blame them, if you really understood?
