THOMASBORO, Ill. (WCIA) — One bubble on the ballot for voters in Thomasboro is whether or not to raise property taxes for the school district. It would be the first time in 40 years.

The referendum is asking for a 1% increase. This means if you have a $100,000 home, your property tax would go up by around $333 a year, or roughly $27 a month.

Superintendent Bonnie McArthur said property taxes are the main source of revenue for the district.

“This referendum is for our education fund. It’s the heart of a school district,” McArthur said. “It is for paying teachers. It’s for the curriculum. It’s for the computers, it’s for the kids and their programs. And those aren’t things that are easily seen. So it’s difficult. It’s difficult to pass a referendum, hopeful that we will pass it.”

A similar proposition was on the ballot in 2014, but failed. If it doesn’t pass this year, McArthur said they could be faced with a difficult consolidation in the future.
